LA JOLLA, CA — At least 2 people were arrested and 24 were detained for public intoxication at UC San Diego’s Sun God Festival on May 3, between the hours of 12 P.M. and 6 P.M., according to newly released logs by the UC San Diego Police Department.

Among the 24 logged public intoxication cases, 23 individuals were transported to detox and one person was arrested. Additionally, one other person was arrested on drug-related charges. In total, UCPD logged and processed 25 alcohol or drug violations during the event.

647(g) PC – Public Intoxication is a misdemeanor offense, punishable by up to 6 months in jail, and/or a fine of up to $1,000 if convicted. All detainees were reportedly processed through the UCSD Police Department RIMAC Prisoner Processing Center.

However, it’s unlikely that most cases will result in formal charges, as individuals are often detained for their own safety and released after sobering up without being prosecuted.

Prior to the event, the university sent out an email notifying students that police presence would be increased during the festival, and that the university will be enforcing a temporary no-guest policy.

“From Friday, May 2nd at 7pm until Sunday, May 4th at 7am (“Sun God Weekend”), each residential area will observe a strict “residents-only” policy.  Only residents of a residential area are permitted in that area.”

It’s unknown if any students were referred to student conduct with no-guest policy violations.

UC San Diego’s Sun God festival is an annual, highly anticipated event funded by student activity fees. Organized every year by UCSD AS Concerts & Events, the festival features live music and other activities that are open to all attendees.

This year’s lineup included Disco Lines, Duckwrth, Slayyyter, Sun Room, and The Arkangels.
