Nearly 25 years after the release of Linkin Park’s One Step Closer, the song’s lyrics became the focus of a new Gen-Z slang, abbreviated as INALRTB.

INALRTB is an acronym for “I need a little room to breathe.” The line appears five times in the song One Step Closer, sung by Linkin Park’s late lead singer, Chester Bennington. The line became an internet meme after some nu metal fans started abbreviating the lyric to poke fun at the fast pace at which the line is sung in the original song.

According to data from Google trends, the term started gaining popularity in 2024, with incomplete data indicating a sharp spike in searches for the term in 2025, likely coinciding with the band’s return in September 2024.
