At least 5 new polls have been conducted following the Biden – Trump debate on CNN, showing Donald Trump outperforming Biden by an average of 2.8 points. According to FiveThirtyEight, an opinion poll analysis website keeping track of the national polls, Trump is currently ahead of Biden by +1.3 points nationwide. By contrast, Trump was only ahead by +0.1 on June 26, the day before the debate.

A poll of 841 likely voters by Leger that was conducted from June 27 to June 28 found that Americans overwhelmingly feel that Biden lost the debate. According to the report, of the total respondents who said they are likely to vote, 45% said Donald Trump should be the Republican nominee while 38% said Joe Biden should be the Democratic nominee.

In a poll of 1,011 likely voters by Data for Progress, conducted on June 28, 73% of Independents either somewhat disapproved or strongly disapproved of Biden’s performance. When given a two-way election matchup scenario of Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden, 45% choose Joe Biden while 48% choose Donald Trump.

This trend continued with two other polls conducted by SurveyUSA and Patriot Polling. In a June 28 poll of 2,315 likely voters, SurveyUSA found that 45% of the respondents favored Donald Trump, while 43% favored Joe Biden. And in a June 27-29 poll of 1,029 registered voters by Patriot Polling, 41% said they favored Biden, 44% favored Trump, and 11% favored Kennedy as their choice for President.

The only poll showing Biden in the lead was a June 28 poll of 2,086 registered voters conducted by Morning Consult, in which Biden led Trump by 1 point (45% to 44%). Notably, in the same poll,

“a 47% plurality of Democrats, say Biden should be replaced as the Democratic candidate for president.”

Prominent democrats and political figures have been calling on President Biden to drop out of the race following the debate performance. News outlets immediately began conducting post debate analyses, with some media personalities like Van Jones saying “He did not do well at all”, continuing to suggest that other options exist, “we’re still far from our convention, and there is time for this party to figure out a different way forward if he will allow us to do that.”

2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang, who endorsed Joe Biden in 2020, took to Twitter to say “Guys, the Dems should nominate someone else – before it’s too late.”

He posted again on Sunday, stating on X: “So I’m hearing there are Democratic-aligned donors putting together a fund that would go to the Dem nominee – but not if the candidate is Joe Biden whom they regard as too likely to lose. It’s designed to show support for moving on from Joe.”

More polls are expected to come out in the coming weeks, giving a clearer picture of where voters stand on this issue.
