LA JOLLA, CA — UC San Diego police received a report Sunday afternoon that benches near the campus’s Snake Path had been defaced with a swastika symbol.

The incident was reported to have occurred between 2:16 p.m. and 2:33 p.m. on March 8 and was referred to detectives. No arrests have been reported in connection with the vandalism so far.

Details about the incident were first disclosed in UCSD Police Department’s publicly available media bulletin. Police logs did not provide further details about the vandalism. We have reached out to UC San Diego Police for comment but have not yet heard back.

UCSD has previously been targeted with similar vandalism. In November 2016, a swastika and the words “Heil Trump” were spray-painted near a campus bus stop.

The swastika is widely recognized today as a symbol of Nazi Germany and antisemitism. The Nazi regime adopted the symbol in the 1920s, and it became closely associated with Adolf Hitler’s government and the Holocaust during World War II.
