LA JOLLA, CA — “Unknown suspect(s) entered two unsecured buildings under construction” at UC San Diego, and “removed large amount of Copper Wire and other equipment,” resulting in a loss of $24,232.38 according to newly released logs by the UC Police Department.
The incident occurred at the Ridge Walk North Living and Learning Center sometime between February 14 and February 17, and was classified as “grand theft” by UCPD. No arrests have been reported in connection with the theft so far.
Copper wire thefts have become increasingly common in the past year, with some high profile thefts leaving key city infrastructure in the dark.
According to the FBI, copper and other scrap metal is often stolen by individuals and organized groups hoping to make quick cash from reselling the metal.
