Do you need to quickly reduce the file size of a JPG photo on your Mac without uploading it to a web service? Here’s a quick guide on how you can do it using the tools that macOS provides.
First, navigate to “Apps” in your dock and find the Terminal app.
After you open the terminal, make sure the photo you want to compress is visible on your desktop. Then copy this command into the terminal and replace “photo” with the name of the JPG file you want to compress.
cd ~/Desktopsips -Z 2000 photo.jpg --out photo_compressed.jpgOnce you paste the command, run it by pressing the “return” key on your keyboard.
The compressed photo will appear on your desktop as a new file.
If you want to compress the photo even more, use this command instead.
cd ~/Desktopsips -Z 1200 photo.jpg --out photo_compressed.jpgImportant: before you run the command, you must change “photo” to match the filename of the JPG you want to compress.
This method will preserve the original JPG file while creating a compressed copy.
